- The girl struck another match and when it illuminated her, she imagined herself in a room alongside a table covered with beautiful china and which had a delicious - looking roast goose.
- But while she imagined the goose hopping down from the dish and waddling across to her, the match went out and she could see nothing but the thick, cold wall.
- As she struck another match, she saw a vision of a beautiful Christmas tree. The many candles on the tree rose higher and higher until they turned it into bright stars, one of which fell and streaked the sky with light. She was reminded of her grandmother who said that whenever a star falls, a soul goes up to GOD.
- As she struck another match on the wall, there was a glow in which her grandmother stood shining. She quickly struck the rest of the matches she had to keep her Granny with her.
- Oh, take me with you! I know you will disappear when the match is burnt out!
- GRANNY!!
- The matches flared up and her granny took her little girl in her arms and flew away towards God, where they would never feel cold nor hunger nor fear.
- But in the cold dawn, the little girl sat frozen to death, still holding the matches and next to a burnt packet.People said many things but no one knew the beautiful visions and the blaze of glory she experienced.
- She was evidently trying to warm herself
