- In this scene, Cole is having a meeting with Circle Justice. His parents are on both sides of him. They are talking about what they are going to do with Cole since he beat up Peter. They are debating on whether they will send him to the island or if he will go to jail. The outcome of this event determines other big events that happen in the book.
- During this scene, Cole is getting mauled by the spirit bear. He had attacked it because he was mad that it wasn't scared of him like most things and people were. Cole is facing life or death right now. This scene will lead to something that will be a turning point in the book.
- Cole is sitting against a tree after getting mauled by the spirit bear. There is a huge storm happening and there was a flash of lightning close by and Cole had heard a tree fall. Cole remembers that there were baby sparrows in a tree and he was wondering if they were okay when he saw the nest and the baby sparrows dead. Cole realizes that life is a cycle, you are born, and you eventually die. Even though the baby birds were young and innocent, they died. Cole now realizes that he doesn't want to end up like the baby sparrows, not yet anyways. This is a major turning point in the book.
