- Three nights later old Major died. The work of teaching and organizing the animals in order to keep the rebellion alive naturally fell upon the pigs. The main leaders amongst the pigs were two young boars called Snowball and Napoleon. Snowball was quicker in speech, however Napoleon was considered to have a better character. The best known among all the pigs was Squealer who was a brilliant speaker, and could persuade other animals with ease. Under this leadership, the animals held secret meetings at night. The animals have a lot of questions about the revolution such as if there will be any sugar after the rebellion, to which Snowball replies “no”. The animals are sad about some of the changes and sacrifices however they are willing to do it in order to enact the rebellion. A crow named Moses tells the animals about a place called “Sugar Candy Mountain”, where the animals can do whatever they want to do. One evening Mr. Jones had forgotten to feed the animals so in a fit of fury and hunger the animals broke into the feed. Just then Mr. Jones woke up and led his men into the stable and started whipping all the animals. All of a sudden the animals united and started fighting back. They drove Mr. Jones and his men out of the farm. Now the rebellion has been successfully completed. The animals toured the farm, admiring all that they had just claimed. They re-name the farm to Animal Farm. In the following days the pigs paint the seven commandments on to the side of the barn, and the animals start up on the harvest. They all worked hard while the pigs supervised. Boxer worked the hardest of them all, always restating his motto, “I will work harder” when things get tough in order to keep going on. The animals make a flag and hold meetings which always ends with the signing of “Beasts Of England”. Snowball makes various committees and tries to educate the other animals. Most of them dont get past the letter “D” in the alphabet. The seven commandments are reduced to a single maxim stating, “Four legs good two legs bad” for the dumber animals to understand. It is revealed that the pigs have been taking all the milk for themselves, however when the animals question this, Squealer reassures them that it is for the greater good of the farm and that if they did not get the milk Mr. Jones would come back. This makes all the animals agree.
