- Some Socs jumped Pony and his friend Johnny at a park and try to drown Pony. In desperation, Johnny kills one of the Socs. named Bob. Pony and Johnny run away and hide in an abandoned church. They also bleach and cut their hair to disguise themselves.
- CONFLICT
- Ponyboy Curtis (left) is a boy who lives in the west side of town with his two brothers, Sodapop (Middle) and Darrel (Right).
- FALLING ACTION
- The church catches on fire when Johnny and Pony are away, and some children were stuck inside. Pony and Johnny saved the children with help from their friend Dally, but Johnny is severely hurt in the action.
- RESOLUTION
- The rich kids who live on the east side of town, called socs, are against the poorer kids who live on the west side of town, called greasers. For example, some socs threaten to kill Ponyboy on his way home from the movies.
- Johnny ended up dying in the hospital, and Dally was so sad that he ended up tricking the police to kill him.
- Pony struggled through the loss of his friends and struggled in school. His teacher asked him to write a theme, so he wrote the book.
