  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling Theme: Fear and suspicion are destructive.
  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Sterling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. To illustrate, the residents suspicion and fear of an unknown entity caused people to destroy their relationship with a fellow citizen by the name of Les Goodman. Their motive and reasoning is clearly driven by fear and to support this I have a quote from the book, (a little reluctantly). 'Well... sometimes I go to bed late at night. A couple of times... a couple of times I'd come out on the porch and I'd see Mr. Goodman here in the wee hours of the morning standing out in the front of his house... looking up at the sky. (She looks around the circle of faces) That's right looking up at the sky as if... as if he were waiting for something,' (Rod Sterling) this clearly shows how her accusation is purely driven by fear because she is stuttering and she is talking a bit reluctantly. In addition, Charlie shot a person in the dark only because he couldn't see who it was and his fear of this unknown being turning off the power led him to kill his friend and neighbor Pete Van Horn. Furthermore, they wrecked the entire street because all the lights on the street were flashing everyone was blaming each other and eventually it ended in every house on the street being destroyed only because of suspicion and fear. In conclusion, the theme of this story is fear and suspicion is destructive.
