- In the climax of the story Jonas starts his training as the new receiver and he receives his rules and one of the rules is that he can lie and ask questions that others can't ask. So he starts to ask everyone a bunch of questions. One of the questions he asks to the giver is if he can see this mornings release and the givers shows it to him and it was Jonas's father. Jonas's then realizes what a release really is.
- In the falling action of the story Jonas took Gabriel and ran away from the community so Gabriel would not be released. Jonas ran and took Gabriel away from the community to elsewhere because Gabriel was not developed enough and ran out of time so he had to be released.
- In the resolution of the story Jonas and Gabriel find themselves shivering and starving. Jonas thinks that there is nothing else to do but continue up the hill and when they reach the top of the hill Jonas uses his final strength and a special knowledge that was deep inside him, he found a sled that was waiting and then he hugged gabriel tight and they started down the hill.
