- Art and Architecture
- Hi! I will be telling you about art and architecture in the Hellenistic Civilization. During this time period, arts and architects became employed to make designs for, and build temples, palaces and other public buildings. The impact that this had on society, was since the building being created were larger than ones of other civilizations, it reflected on the rulers viewing themselves as godlike monarchs during this Age.
- Culture
- Hi! Today I will be telling you about the influence of culture during the Hellenistic Age. As we know, Alexander the Great founded new cities during his conquering of the Persian Empire. Greek people settled in these new cities, bringing their customs with them and local people adapting. Along with this, the Greek people also adapted to customs from the local people. This was the creation and blending of both eastern and western cultures forming during this Age, impacting society.
- Legacy of Alexander the Great
- Hey, you over there! I am Alexander the Great and I will be telling you about my legacy. I started my quest at 20 years old, when my father was assassinated and could not live out his plan to conquer the Persian Empire, so instead, I did. I organized forces to start this conquest and we started our journey in 334 B.C., across the Dardanelles, where we proceeded to take victory after victory, going across the Asia Minor, Palestine, and places South of Egypt. While conquering cities, the culture of Greece stated adapting in these new places and the Greek people that followed me, adapted to the local's culture adapted as well. I enforced the cultures blending, where a new eastern and western formed. With my conquering across the Persian Empire, and enforcement of culture in places, the Hellenistic Age was able to last in society for so long.
- Women
- Hi! I will be telling you about women during the Hellenistic Age. During this time, unlike a lot of other civilization, women had greater opportunities and roles in society. Women were able to learn to read and write, become philosophers, poets, etc,. Royal women were important due to their duties of being involved with their family members, who were males, ruling. The impact that this had on society, was that it gave more equal roles and jobs to both men and women, and gave more opportunities for women to be involved, actually in society.
- Math and Science
- Hi! I will talking to you about the math and science that formed during the Hellenistic Age. The discoveries and ideas that formed, were based on Greek, Babylonian, and Egyptian knowledge of these subjects. For math, a man named Pythagoras, developed a formula to find the relationship between the three sides of a right triangle, which we still use on math today. A men named Euclid wrote a textbook, called '"The Elements", that is used for modern geometry. Astronomer Aristarchus came up with the idea that the Earth rotated an on its x-axis when it orbited around the sun. This is called the heliocentric theory, in which we use today. Eratosthenes, was the astronomer that proved that the Earth was round. Archimedes, Hellenistic scientist used physics to make different inventions. He created the use of the lever and a pulley, where he first used it to bring a ship into shore. The impact that these subjects had on society, was creating new theory's and inventions to learn about or use in the society of this Age, for people to know more about the things around them, like where they lived, Earth, and how different objects could work. Also, it impacted society with new learning skills for people to advance their knowledge in.
- Medicine
- Hi! I am a modern day doctor, and I will be telling you about the advancements of medicine during the Hellenistic Age. First off, around 400 B.C., Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was a studier of the reasons for illness and searching for their cures. Although, he did make an oath for doctors to swear by, while practicing medicine. This oath is this, "help the sick according to my ability and judgment but never with a view to injury and wrong". Physicians also had to protect and keep the privacy of their patients for their job. This set standards in society for the relationship between physicians and their patients and the physicians role of helping people as well. I'm a doctor, and we still have to take an oath just like this one and protect a patient's privacy, showing the Hellenistic Age's influence on society today too.
