- Nick, who works for the Commander comes, into Offred's room to tell her that the Commander has requested that she go visit him in his room. Offred is very surprised and hesitant to accept this offer because a Commander is not allowed to have a romantic relationship with their handmaid.
- Offred enters the Commander’s room and meets him. Offred is hesitant to speak to the Commander as she fears even saying hello could somehow get her in trouble. However, the Commander catches Offred off guard when he asks her to spend time with him and play a game of scrabble. Offred agrees.
- The first word that is spelled out in Scrabble is the word “larynx” which is a voice box. This symbolizes how women are not allowed to speak in the Republic of Gilead.

- The second word that is spelled out in the game is the word “valance.” A valance is the fabric on a curtain. This symbolizes the meaning of how Offred, as well as the other handmaids, are kept away from the outside world and enclosed behind the curtains of the palace walls.

- The third and final word that is spelled out is the word “zygote.” A zygote is a fertilized egg, which relates to the handmaids as their task is to become pregnant by their commander. All three words that are spelt out in the game of scrabble relate to the common themes found throughout the book.

- Once the game ends, the Commander goes to kiss Offred goodbye. Offred is shocked and does not know how to react to the kiss. She ultimately goes along with the kiss because she does not want to be rude but is distracted and confused when it ends. As Offred walks back to her room, she questions if the Commander is starting to develop genuine feelings for her.
