The Anaconda Plan was to blockade the South's ports and cut off its trade, take control of the Mississippi River to divide the Confederacy, and capture Richmond. The North was able to blockade the South's ports and cut off its trade. The North led 46 ships up the Mississippi River to New Orleans and overwhelmed the city into surrender without the South even firing a shot. We lost so many people
Yay, we won Antietam!
General Robert E. Lee decided to invade Maryland because he hoped that showing the strength of the South would convince Maryland to join the Confederacy. After McClellan's troops pounded Lee's badly outnumbered forces, Lee decided to retreat to Virginia. McClellan claimed Antietam as a Union victory but many people saw it as a defeat for both sides because they had lost a lot of people in that battle.

Victory is ours in Gettysburg!
Withdraw to Virginia!
I issue the Emancipation Proclamation
As the war continued, Lincoln decided to make abolition a goal of the Union. Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation. In the Confederate States it had little immediate effect on slavery and the Confederate States ignored it. In the North, it changed the war into a crusade for freedom. Lee hoped to capture a Northern city to help convince the weary North to seek peace, but when the Confederates attempted to find weak spots in the Union position, the Union lines held firm. Picket let the Confederate soldiers in a charge across low ground separating the two forces but as they pushed forward union gunners opened great holes in the advancing lines. After the battle Gettysburg was a victory for the Union and Lee had lost about a third of his army and decided to withdraw to Virginia.
