- Hi Mr. Gary we need help understanding exponents can you help us?
- can you give us a example?
- To be put simply, The base is the number that is getting multiplied by a exponent
- an example is that in the equation 5^100, the base that would be 5.

- In your example of 5^100 what is the tiny number on top of the base?
- So the problem 5^100 would be multiplying 5 with itself 100 times?
- That is the exponent. The exponent is a number that states how many times the base number is used in multiplication

- what about for division?
- when multiplying exponential expressions such as 2^3 and 2^7 you add the exponents together and keep the base the same the answer to this example would be 2 ^9
- when dividing exponential expressions your subtract the exponents instead and keep the bases as the same
- Now you must understand how to add and multiple exponents
- Also it is important to remember that the bases must be the same in order to use this rule

- do we add the exponents when we raise an exponent raised to another exponent together?
- When solving problems such as (5^5)^6 you multiply the exponents together

- What if I were to have a exponent that is a 0 to a base?
- If that occurs, the answer for that problem would be 1
- Negative exp rule
- What would you do if you had a negative exponent to a number?
- if you ever encounter a negative exponent remember to put the whole negative exponential expression into the denominator
- So the answer of the example you gave would be 5^30?

- always remember that any base with a exponent of zero is equal to one
