- Many people wanted to preserve the Union with a series of amendments (that weren't passed) to save slavery south of the 36, 30-degree line.

- Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, And South Carolina had made their own government and country. The Confederate States of America.
- Many southerners welcomed secession. However, some were worried about the destruction of their beautiful country.
- Lincoln had won but was not yet elected. James Buchanan said that they had no right to secede. Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861.
