Stop him!
Going to need to check your property, ma'am. Some slaves escaped!
Oh my! I hope you find them soon!
Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1820. After mistreatment and a serious head injury, she made her escape in 1849. She later became one of the most famous conductors of the Underground Railroad.
The Underground Railroad was the name people called the system of safe-houses on an escape route that fugitive slaves used. The "stations" were usually homes of abolitionists or freed slaves.
The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made it difficult for escaped slaves to remain free, even in the northern states. Harriet Tubman made over a dozen trips and led slaves to freedom!
