Thirteen-year old Samuel lives with his parents in the wilderness in the British colony of Pennsylvania. Samuel knows how to hunt and survive in the forest. A bloody Revolutionary war begins and take Samuel's parents as prisoners. Samuel must follow them to free his parents.

- Samuel is hunting in the woods. Each day he hunts with his 40 caliber gun and kills 10-15 deer everyday to take back home to his family. Many times, there is more food than necessary, but needed to kill because the deer raids their cornfields.
- Samuel went hunting again, as if it was a normal day. In the distance, he sees smoke in the air, and wonders what is it? He feels like something is wrong and runs back to his home and finds dead people everywhere. The house has been ransacked and his parents are gone.
- Samuel is now on the hunt for his parents. He starts to tracks footprints. Indians spotted him and out of fear, Samuel shot one of the Indians. Another Indain throws a tomahawk that knocked Samuel out.
- The Indians healed and released Samuel. He then started his travel to find his parents. Samuel is starving and finds a farm. The owners of the farm and their daughter Annie welcome him into their home and have a great feast. Later, the British soldiers come. Luckily, Annie and Samuel escape into the forest.
- Samuel and Annie agree to both look for his parents. After walking for a very long time, they met a man named Abner with a wagon on a city road. Abner would then take the two teenagers to New York to find Samuel's parents.
- Abner takes Samuel and Annie to New York. They cross a river and walk to find Samuel's parents. Amazingly, Samuel runs into his mother. He realizes his father is in a prison camp in New York City.
- Abner has a plan to rescue Samuel's father by waiting until midnight when all the soldiers are drunk. Abner distracted the soldiers, then Samuel hit the guard in the head with a brick.
- Abner and Samuel succeed in rescuing Samuel's father. They reunite with Samuel's Mom and Annie.
- Samuel, his parents, and Annie decide to travel to a safe place in Philadelphia to live.
