Ibn al-Haytham - circa 1015
EM Spectrum
Al-Haytham showed that light travels in straight lines through different optical experiments.
Johann Ritter - 1801
William Herschel - 1800
Ritter was looking at how fast silver chlroide changed when exposed to different colors of light. The silver chloride turned black fastest just outside the violet part. We now know this to be ultraviolet radiation.
Herschel discovered infrared when he was experimenting to see the change in temperature of the different colors of light.
Heinrich Hertz - 1886
Hertz was the first person to send and receive radio waves.
Wilhelm Röntgen - 1895
When working with vacuum tube equipment he discovered an unknown type of rays which he named X. While experimenting with the rays he found that they can see through skin.
Paul Villard - 1900
Rn
Alpha Beta Gamma
While experimenting with radon, Villard discovered a type of radiation that was more penetrating than alpha or beta radiation. He had discovered gamma radiation.
