  • One day in Biology class...
  • Hey! I am Nancy Nucleic Acid
  • I'm Clay Carbohydrate
  • Hello! I am Peter Protein
  • My name is Lucy Lipid
  • Five days until project is due...
  • What are macromolecules anyway? 
  • They are molecules that are made up of a very large number of atoms. All organisms need four types of organic macromolecules.
  • I have a great idea!
  • After school at Peter's house...
  • Guess what? Our last names are the four main types of macromolecules. We'll each talk about them. 
  • I get to do proteins! 
  • I'll tell all about nucleic acids! 
  • Yes, I describe lipids! 
  • I'm on carbohydrates!
  • Before school...
  • We cannot forget to tell everyone the 4 main types of macromolecules and some common examples of each: 1. Carbohydrates-starches and sugar (glucose) 2. Lipids-fats, oils, waxes, and steroids 3. Proteins-enzymes which speed up or slow down chemical reactions 4. Nucleic Acids-DNA and RNA And remind them that all of these macromlecules contain the element carbon.
  • At soccer practice ...
  • Clay tells his teammates they will need carbohydrates for energy to run. Carbohydrates are made of the elements-carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Carbohydrate monomers (basic units) are called monosaccharides. Carbohydrate polymers (many monomers put together) are called polysaccharides. Carbohydrates main jobs are to provide energy, regulate sugar (glucose), and break down fatty acids.
  • At play practice...
  • Lucy tells the drama club lipids are needed to provide energy to sing and dance. Lipids are made of the elements-carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Lipids have no monomers and no polymers. Lipids main jobs are to provide energy, produce hormones, and help in digestion and absorption of foods.
  • Four friends were sitting in class trying to come up with an idea for their final project. They had to explain macromolecules to people who did not know about them.
  • During baseball practice...
  • Peter shares with his baseball teammates that proteins can help them repair their muscles if they are hurt while playing. Proteins are made of the elements-carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Protein monomers are called amino acids (building blocks of proteins linked together by peptide bonds). Protein polymers are called polypeptides. Proteins main jobs are to repairs muscles, give structure to cells, regulate cell activities, transport materials in cells, and fight diseases.
  • Peter told his friends to meet him after school at his house to discuss his great idea for the project.
  • Before a student council meeting...
  • Nancy tells the students that Nucleic Acids carry genetic information to the cells just like they send out information to the rest of school. Nucleic acids are made of the elements-carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Nucleic acid monomers are called nucleotides (made of 5 carbon sugar, phosphate group, and 4 nitrogen bases- Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine). Nucleic acid polymers are called polynucleotides. The two main types are DNA and RNA. Nucleic acid main jobs are to carry genetic information for development and function of living things.
  • The friends were excited that they each would get to explain about the different types of macromolecules. They were going to teach people all about them during the week. They would tell what elements they are made of, their functions, and about their monomers and polymers. The whole Blue Gator community will know all about macromolecules. It will be great!
  • The day before the project due date...
  • I really think we did a great job of explaining all about the four macromolecules. 
  • Lots of different groups around school now know about carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
  • The friends make sure they tell their friends the four main types of macromolecules and give examples.
