- Champion of Freedom Beowulf and the people of Herot believed heroes should fight with forces against evil. Beowulf came to save Hrothgar and the people of Herot from the evil monster Grendel, who terrorized the town and killed people while they were sleeping. Page 33 Line 421
- Courage Beowulf's courage was one of the main reasons that he was able to defeat Grendel, Grendel's mother, and then the dragon. He believed in himself, and he wasn't afraid of anything. [Beowulf Speaking] "I have heard, too, that the monster's scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I." Page 33 Line 430
- Strength Beowulf has super strength just like most other characters in Epic poems. Beowulf's strength combined with his courage is what makes him an almost unstoppable force. "In his far off home Beowulf, Higlac's follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in the world." Page 33 Line 432
- Devotion Beowulf was extremely devoted to protecting Herot and his people, even in his old age. He did everything he could to beat everyone who threatened Herot. He was so devoted that when he was tasked with defeating a dragon that terrorized Herot, he did it, but it cost him his life. Page 42 Line 688
- Loyalty No matter what happened, Beowulf always stayed loyal to his people and Herot. He always fought for them no matter the circumstance. Even though his people were fearful and turned their backs on him, he still stayed and fought for Herot. Page 43 Line 746
- Love of Glory Like all heroes in Epic Poems, they love glory and love to be recognized for what they have done. Beowulf was honored after he killed Grendel and his mother, and was also mourned after he was killed in the battle with the dragon. Page 46 Line 829-843
