- Pip, the protagonist, is introduced as an orphan who lives with his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Joe. One day, he visits his mother's grave at the cemetery and is threatened by a convict for food. He steals food for the convict and the convict is touched by the kindness he receives from Pip.

- Mrs. Joe was very strict and unkind to Pip. She can be seen as an antagonist. She and her husband get an opportunity to send Pip to date a girl from a rich family, Estella, so they force Pip to go to the playdate at Miss Havisham's house. Estella toys with his feelings and he falls in love with her. Miss Havisham then has him become an apprentice while raising his hopes of becoming rich and worthy enough for Estella.

- Pip secretly worked as an apprentice for Ms. Havisham but then started working for Joe as an apprentice. Years later, on Ms. Havisham's Birthday he visits her with intentions of seeing Estella but is manipulated by Ms. Havisham instead where she toys with his feelings.

- One day, Pip meets a lawyer at the bar who tells him that he was given a large amount of money by a mysterious benefactor and that he must leave for London and be tutored into a gentleman at once. His tutor, Matthew, is revealed as Ms. Havisham's nephew and he rooms with his son, Herbert, which makes Pip believe that Ms. Havisham is the benefactor and that she is doing this to get Estella to love him, even though, he is constantly shot down by Estella.
- One day, A man named Abel Magwitch visits Pip and tells him that he is the mysterious benefactor and that he was the convict who met him in the cemetery and was also Estella's father. Pip was appalled and morally distraught and wanted to cut off all contact with Magwitch but felt the responsibility to at least help Magwitch escape London as he was on the run from the police and his previous partner in crime.
- In the next few days, he hears the news of Estella's marriage and visits Ms. Havisham to confront her when Estella arrives and gets in a fight with Ms. Havisham which reveals Ms. Havisham's lies, deceit and manipulation. She regrets and asks for forgiveness and Pip forgives her and leaves.
