- I was sitting in Latin class when the teacher said the Latin word to learn, "discere" I then remembered the riddle "The copper key awaits explorers in a tomb filled with horrors but you have much to learn if you hope to earn a place among the high scorers." The key was hidden on Ludas, the planet where all the schools are located. Tomb of Horrors is an old Dungeons and Dragons game.

- Wade Watts was a kid with no parents who decided to give up life in the real world and attend school within OASIS.
- Wade figures out a clue to the first riddle.
- Wade is battling a skeleton king in a game of joust to win the copper key. This battle takes place on the planet where all the OASIS schools are located. James Holiday wanted a student to win the contest.
- Wade is clearing the first gate by playing Matthew Broderick in the movie, War Games. This is another example of the contest focusing on pop culture.
