- Della was sad in her living room because it was Christmas and she didn't have anything, she only $1.87. She and her husband Jim were a poor family. Della wanted to give him a chain for his pocket watch.
- Climax

- Jim and Della had two prized possessions, Della's was her long beautiful hair, while Jim's was his pocket watch, a family gift.
- FALLING ACTION
- I sold my hair to buy you a chain for your pocket watch.
- Della would sell her beautiful hair so she could buy Jim a silver chain for his pocket watch as a Christmas present since he only had leather.
- RESOLUTION
- Make no mistake, Dell, about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that can make me like my girl less. But if you unwrap that package, you can see why you bothered me for a while at first."
- Della was worried about Jim's reaction, she was afraid that because of her new haircut he would find her ugly. Jim arrived home and seeing Della was speechless.
- Just as Della was going to deliver the gift to Jim, she found out that Jim had sold his pocket watch to buy her some beautiful and expensive combs which she would no longer be able to use. They both realized that their reals were useless.
- Dell, I sold my pocket watch to buy you these combs.
- Della told her husband how worried she was that he thought she looked ugly and that she thought his reaction was because of that. Jim told Della that no matter what she looked like, nothing was going to make his love for her diminish.
