  • Hello practitioners! Today will be reviewing the topic of the ESL methods when teaching the English language.
  • The Direct method focused on teaching English for individuals to be able to communicate in a faster way. Soldiers were introduced to this method and later on around the world. Basically, learners were taught through oral repetition and grammar through the inductive way.
  • this can be problematic because not all students learn the same and there can be grammatical issues as part of the "inductive way" meaning students could become fluent orally but grammatically, they could encounter issues and confusions.
  • The grammar-translation method relies on teaching English through grammar and translation. Students are to focus on grammar rules and with this be able to translate sentences in the process.
  • The audio-lingual method, on the other hand, is based on the behaviorist method, and language is learned through reinforcement and feedback. Learners who do a good job in the process receive positive feedback if they do something wrong they will receive negative feedback.
  • These methods are great examples of their function and purpose, but overall, how do you think the methods work? As practitioners, do you think they are worth using?
  • Well, the ESL methods allow educators to embark on different teaching approaches to find what are the best alternatives to acquire and learn the language. Before the use of technology and the internet, teachers would apply ESL methods as part of the learning process.
  • ESL methods can as well be used on students with disabilities, or learning delays, however, it is on the educator to find how it can be applied in the language learning process.
  • Since there are many ESL methods, it gives teachers the chance to adapt or integrate them into curricula or lessons as a way to help learners become more in touch with the way they learn the language. The methods are worth using but as expected but there is the need to modify how they are approached in the classroom.
  • Student needs should be the main aspect when applying the ESL methods since not all students learn the same, our role is to find alternatives/approaches that can fit their learning proficiencies as well as to make adjustments to the methods since some can be outdated but with a valid purpose of acquiring the English language.
  • That's correct you guys, traditional teaching classrooms have changed over the years, with the use and addition of the methods, the way teaching we teach English have been modified and with this new forms of teaching has been developed. However, the ESL methods have pros and cons, this is an important point to keep in mind because at present time, they can influence how students acquire language.
  • Some of the ESL methods are teacher-centered, allowing teachers to be in total control of what they think is appropriate for students as they acquired language, however, it is best if teachers focus on students' needs and build communication, reliability, and trust to assure language acquisition and student confidence.
  • As future educators, you need to remember, teaching approaches are to be student-centered or teacher-student centered. That will give students the opportunity to gain as much information as possible when it comes to learning English.
