  • Milo is a cat who loves to play outside and chase squirrels. He is always getting in trouble for chasing them and getting stuck everywhere.
  • "Milo and the Squirrel" by Serena Pradhan
  • One day, Milo is playing and sees a squirrel. He chases the squirrel 16 feet up a tree. A firefighter comes to his rescue, but does not know what size ladder to use. The firefighter is standing 11 feet from the tree. He uses pythagorean theorem (a2 + b2 = c2) to determine the size of the ladder he will need. After working out the problem, the firefighter figures out that he is going to need a ladder that is about 19 feet tall.

  • After the firefighter rescues Milo, Milo follows the squirrel to the park. In an attempt to chase it, Milo gets stuck at the top of the slide. Some kids at the playground try to rescue him. The kids are standing 8 feet from the slide, and looking at Milo from a 47 degree angle. The kids try to find out how high Milo is from the ground. They use tan (add/hyp) to figure out that Milo is 8.6 feet high from the ground.

  • Once the children were able to get Milo down from the slide, Milo followed the squirrel again all the way to the top of someone's house. The homeowners notice Milo and try to get him down. They want to know at what degree angle they are looking at Milo from. All they know is that the house is 26 feet tall and the ladder from where they are standing is 33 ft long. They use the inverse of sin and figure out that they are looking at milo from a 52 degree angle.

  • After Milo is safely down from the roof of the house, he spots the exact same squirrel again. Except this time, it brought its friends. This gets Milo so excited that he chases them all the way down a well. A farmer sees Milo stuck and tries to get him out but doesn't know how deep to drop his bucket. All he does know is that he is looking at Milo from a 26 degree angle and that he is standing 72 feet away from where Milo is in the well. The farmer uses cos (adj/hyp) to find out that he needs to drop the bucket 64.7 feet down for it to reach Milo.

  • In the end, Milo learned his lesson to stop chasing cats because he kept getting stuck everywhere and people had to keep rescuing him. At least they all got to use some math!
  • THE END!
