- There are two main characters in this book. One character is Elisha, she is a senior but the the remainder of the book is mix with her memories of herself as a 15-year-old. The second character is Jeremiah, he is going through his parents divorce and people being racist. The setting is in the school which is where Elisha and Jeremiah met.
- Beginning
- If You Come Softly By: Jacqueline Woodson
- In this scene Elisha's mom is telling Elisha and Jeremiah they can't date because they of his race and beliefs. Elisha and Jeremiah both agree that its not fair for her mom to choose if they date or not just because of there differences.
- Middle
- Miss are you alright?
- I believe that the message and the moral of the story are the same, which is just the struggle of interracial relationships. The two characters are both in love but society around them doesn't want them together.
- End
- In the beginning of the book Elisha and Jeremiah first saw each other at school. As soon as Elisha saw Jeremiah she could not stop staring and smiling at him. He turned around to look at her but then turn back and started walking down the hallway again.
- In the book it states Two elderly women approach Elisha to ask if she’s okay, apparently concerned that a black man is harassing her with unwanted attention. This situation made Elisha and Jeremiah uncomfortable because they were both fine and they realized the elderly women ask that because he was a different skin color.
- Yes, I'm fine.
- At the end of the book, Jeremiah was murdered by a cop. The cop fired his weapon because he thought Jeremiah was the guy they were searching for. After they saw Jeremiah on the ground they realized that he wasn't the man. The man they were looking for was nor young or a darker complexion like Jeremiah.
