  • Reconstruction of America after the Civil War 1865-1877: The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and was ratified in 1865 by Lincoln. On April 14, 1865 Lincoln was shot in the head and killed by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln wanted a lenient plan and had called for a Ten Percent Plan, in which 10% of the voting population of a state would be readmitted into the Union.
  • The 15th Amendment is now passed.
  • President Andrew Johnson, was the successor to Lincoln and felt "white men alone must manage the South" and excluded high ranking confederates and wealthy planters from the oath. In 1866, Congress overrode President's Johnson's veto and passed the Civil Rights Act, the 14th Amendment and the Reconstruction Act in 1867.
  • Vote for me
  • In 1866, the Civil Rights Act gave African Americans citizenship and made sure that states did not discriminate against Blacks. The Freemen's Bureau Act provided aid, including money for education and social services as well as hospitals and churches for the African Americans.
  • Lets destroy the Republican Party
  • The Reconstruction Act was passed in 1867 , which divided the South into 5 military districts. The States were required to grant black men the right to vote. Andrew Johnson was impeached on May 2,1868 but not convicted. U.S. Grant became the next President and many African Americans voted for him. Congress then passed the 15th Amendment in 1870 which stated no one could be prevented from voting, no matter race or color.
  • Southern Republicans made up the Scalawags (white farmers) and Carpetbaggers (northerners who came south in search of opportunity after the War). The African Americans (former slaves) were very active and voted as well as ran for office.
  • Sherman had promised "40 acres and a mule" to former slaves, but very few received anything. Republicans considered land to be a sacred right, so many plantation owners kept their land. Many Blacks therefore became sharecroppers, in which they worked and got a small piece of land. The Ku Klux Klan was formed who wanted to destroy the Republican Party and prevent Blacks from being in society. By 1877, the Democratics regained the South and were called the Redeemers.
