- Mrs Gage was a very poor, elderly widow. who loved her animals. When she heard about her brothers death and that he had left all his property including 3000 pounds to her, she left her dog in someone’s care and set off to Rodmell
- Old brother Joseph gone at last!
- Upon going to the bank, she discovers that there is no money at all. It turns out his brother tricked her one last time
- I’m sorry madam but we hav not found a trace of your 3000 pounds anywhere. We have only found a fine grey parrot in the house.
- As Mrs Gage sets off home, darkness falls and she is lost, thankfully a fire from the village lights up her path so she can return to the village.
- My brothers house is on fire! Thank god now I can see my path...
- She grieves at the hotel due to the fact that she was told her brothers parrot had died in the fire, she is overjoyed when she sees the parrot alive and well.
- James, you're alive!
- Joseph's money, he hid it well...
- James leads her to the place where her brother stowed his money. This shows the parrots loyalty towards his new owner.
- Mrs Gage lives out the rest of her life in comfort. Just as she's dying on her deathbed, James shrieks one last time and falls to the floor; dead just as her owner passes away.
