- On a stormy night at laburnam villa, the white family are awaiting a visitor, Mr white is playing chess with his son, Herbert and Mrs white is knitting peacefully knitting by the fire. Sargeant-major morris tells them about his time in india.

- mr white reminds morris about the monkeys paw story. the monkeys paw grants you 3 wishes but at terrible consequences. he then throws it in the fire.

- Mr white takes it out of the fire and wishes for 200 pounds and there is a crashing sound as the paw moves. the next day, a man from maw and meggins informs them that herbert has died and they get a compensation of 200 pounds

- Mr white shudders at how their wish came true and is in grief after losing their son. mrs white then makes mr white wish for the revival of herbert so mr white wishes and there is a faint knock heard at the door mrs white tries with all her might to open the door.
