  • Introduce the lesson
  • Today we are going to learn how to read and write CVC words with short vowel a!
  • Vowels, Constants, and CVC Words
  • Vowels? Consonants? CVC words? HUH?
  • Objective
  • Objective I can read and write CVC words with short vowel a.
  • Introduce the lesson to the students. Today we are using a prepared google slide lesson. Explain that we will be learning about short vowel letters. Today we are starting with short vowel /a/ and going to learn to read and write them in CVC words. (Slide 1)
  • Identify and Separate Sounds
  • c a t
  • The next 2 slides continue to introduce the lesson. When first learning how to read, or when working with struggling readers, they may need to be reminded what vowels and consonants are, what CVC words are, and why they are important. (Slides 2 & 3)
  • Spell Words Out
  • What is this? Can we spell it? Let's say the word s l o w l y and see if we can figure out what letter sounds we hear!
  • When you teach a lesson, many students (parents, admin, etc.) will want to know WHY we are learning this lesson, what is the goal. The objective explains to the student what we should know by the end of the lesson.(Slide 4)
  • End lesson, Offer Practice Options
  • What did we learn today? How can we practice what we have learned?
  • Start the lesson! For the majority of the lesson you will be teaching the students to identify the sounds in the words. For example, you show the students a picture of a cat. Let's SOUND it out. What sounds do you hear? Do you think you know what letter sounds you hear? Teach students to isolate their letter sounds (point at and say each) and then blend by swiping your finger from the first to the last.)(Slides 5-16)
  • For the next 3 slides you want to see if students can spell out words by saying the name of the picture out loud, isolating the sounds, and identify the letters for each sound to form a word. (Slides 17-19)
  • Review the words covered in this lesson. Ask students if they can think of any other short vowel /a/ words that we did not cover in the lesson. Suggest activities that students can do on their own or at home with a parent to practice short vowels and CVC words.(Slides 20 & 21)
