  • King Louis XVI was immature and lacked self-confidence. While Louis XVI wanted to be a good king and help his subjects, he faced enormous debt and rising resentment towards a despotic monarchy.

  • The First Estate included the clergy who paid no taxes and owned 10% the land in France. The Second Estate included the Nobility who owned 20% of the land and payed little in taxes. The third Estate included the Bourgeoisie, the working poor, and the peasants. The peasants paid 50% of their income to taxes.
