  • Stella asks Blake about his cufflinks that his ex fiance gave him,"She noticed everything about him, but she didn't tell his to anyone, especially not Desiree" (Bennett 188). Brit Bennett conveys how observant Stella is when it comes to her husband, Blake. She presents how in love Stella is with him.
  • Brit Bennett describes how the twins look, "Twin girls, creamy skin, hazel eyes, wavy hair" (Bennett 6). Bennett displays how the twins fit into the way of Mallard. She reveals how they are black girls of lighter skin but could pass for white if they chose to.
  • Stella reminisces about when she first decided to pass for white, "For the first time in her life she didn't worry about the practical details when she told Blake Sanders yes" (Bennett 197). Throughout the story Bennett tells the thoughts and feelings of Stella as she takes on her new identity as a white woman. She conveys that with this new identity she has to lie about her past which eventually became a struggle to maintain when Jude arrived.

  • Stella thinks back to when she lived with her sister, "The office reminded her of living with Desiree, who'd spent far more time searching for lost things than she would have spent keeping her side of her room clean" (Bennett 229). Brit Bennett shows how Stella has to leave her past behind. When asked about her past, Stella makes up lies saying that her family is long gone even though she still thinks about them daily.

  • Stella and her daughter, Kennedy, are talking at a restaurant,""Here we go again. It's not my fault you grew up poor, Mother. You can't blame me for shit that happened before I was born"" (Bennett 229). Kennedy tells her mom to stop blaming things that happen in the present on her past. Even though Kennedy doesn't know her mom's true past Brit Bennett presents how Stella's lying is making things worse.

  • Stella talks with Loretta about her past, "My folks are long gone," she said. "They're..." (Bennett 180). Stella reveals to Loretta that all of her family had died in the past. Brit Bennett conveys that Stella is a good liar as she is able to convince Loretta to believe her make believe past.
