- Though conditions in Russia were still bad and repression was on the rise, the lives of the poor were improving a little. Agriculture had been reformed, which benefited the lives of the peasants. The economy started improving as well.
- Rasputin was a strange peasant that gained the attention of the Russian public, more notably the Tsar, attention by allegedly having magic powers. Tsar Nicholas II asked for Rasputin to cure his partly inbred son of hemophilia. Rasputin cured his son, though probably not through magic, and became friends with the royal family.
- In 1914, Russia was dragged into WWI. Russia was losing against Germany by a long shot, taking over half the country. The Russian economy started to decline and supplies were running short.
- To make matters worse, Nicholas left for the frontlines. Leaving his German wife to lead a country fighting the Germans. Rasputin was believed to be influencing the Tsar's wife as well, possibly having an affair with her. Combined with his reputation of being a party animal, this greatly damaged the Tsar's reputation, even after his mysterious death.

- The economy was crashing on itself, the autocracy was becoming more questionable, and hunger was on the rise. On International Women's Day of 1917, thousands of hungry women assembled on the capital streets, demanding an end to the war, an end to food rationing, and even an end to the Tsar. Soon men and soldiers joined in on the chaos.

- On his way back to the capital, his train was stopped. Politicians believed that the only way to restore some level of peace was for the Tsar to step down. Since the entire country was against him, the only option for Nicholas was to abdicate. With no other member of the Tsar ready or willing to take the throne, the three hundred years of Tsar rule had come to an end.
