- It was that time of the years again, June 27th, the annual lottery was beginning. Everyone in town were heading to town square to commence the event.
- Rising Action
- Everyone gathered around as Mr. Summers, and Mr. Graves headed out with the old beaten up black box. Mr. Summers was on the left, holding the stool, and Mr. Graves was on the right, holding the box.
- Rising Action
- As both men got ready, out came running Tessie Hutchinson. Who found Mrs. Delacroix all away in the back of the crowded town square. They talked for a bit, but then bid each other goodbye, since Mr. Summers had begun reading out names.
- Rising Action
- “Who is it?, Who's got it?"
- “Is it the Dunbars?, Is it the Watsons?”
- One by one, each head of the household was called up, and given a chance to choose a slip of paper. Mr. Hutchinson was next.
- Finally, Mr. summers had called each and everyone up, including himself, and Mr. Graves. Now it was time to open each slip.
- Everyone stood their silently, worried expressions on their face. As soon as they opened the slips of paper, many began to look around for who got the slip. It was Mr. Hutchinson.
