- The Americans, led by General George Washington, crossed the freezing Delaware river at midnight to go attack the Hessians
- George Washington was a Virginia plantation owner. He later served as a general and eventually became the first president of the United States. On Christmas night 1776, he led his army across the freezing Delaware river to surprise attack Hessain mercenaries forcing them to surrender. He accomplished this with only 2 casualties and that was due to the harsh conditions in the water.
