  • Lord Kelvin wrote to The London Times in the summer of 1906 explaining a theory that radium was not an element. Kelvin was not the only person to doubt Marie's work. This caused Marie to spend a lot of her time proving that radium was an element by measuring its atomic weight. It took her and her old colleague,André Debierne, years but they did succeed in locating where radium goes on the Periodic Table and therefore leaving no room to doubt their research. On top of this and her teaching job, Marie Curie helped create the Radium Institute which was funded by the government-funded University of Paris. It was decided that Marie would supervise the radioactivity division of the Institute while another physician would supervise the medical research laboratory division. Because of all of this and the publication of her comprehensive textbook, A Treatise on Radioactivity, Marie secured the right to an international standard measurement for radium emission which she named the Curie.
  • Marie Curie offered herself as a candidate for the vacant seat for a physicist in the French Academy of Sciences. Eduoard Branly, however, won the election mainly because of false rumors from the right-wing press. The press also started to spread the news of intimate letters between Marie and married Paul Langevin instead of writing about the conference they and 20 other physicists attended. The press statements got so bad that Marie came home to an angry mob in front of her home who terrorized her children. It was eventually resolved but still had some lasting on Marie like severe depression.
  • During the affair scandal, Marie Curie received a second Nobel Prize. This time the prize was for chemistry and recognized her discovery of two elements. She also gave a lecture about her work this time and just as her husband did for her, she made sure to acknowledge Pierre's effort toward the research. Marie, despite how much the press brought her down, went on to do many other things. She helped use x-rays to save soldiers on the war front, continued her work at the Radium Institute, earned a Legion of Honor award but refused it, created the Curie Foundation, and many other admirable things. She had many people doubt her especially since she was a woman but she always ignored them and proved them wrong by continuing to reach for her goals.
