- Ralph is walking along the beach thinking about his time on the island eventually being fustrated with his long, mangy hair always falling upon his eyes.He decides to call a meeting to make an attempt to help everything on the island.

- At the meeting place Ralph grips the conch and berates the boys for not wanting to finish the huts. he also get angry as he thinks that a signal fire is the most important thing to do at this moment but the other boys dont agree and they want to go and hunt with Jack. Ralph wants this signal fire to scare off the 'monsters' to keep the littluns under control, yet Ralph still insists that there are no monsters on the island. Jack also agrees with Ralph but still proceeds to call the though 'The Beast', his words "cry babies" almost connote that he is calling them all cowards for being scared of this beast and they should just put up with it.

- Whilst the meeting is going on, one of the littluns stood forward; Phil, said he had a dream last night about a monster amongst the trees, he was in the dark on his own outside the huts. This terrifies the boys and turns the meeting into chaos and debates about weather or not there is a monster. suddenly Jack insists there is a monster and claims him and his hunters will murder it themselves, Jack then torments Piggy and runs away, and many of the boys follow. Eventually, only Ralph, Piggy, and Simon are left.
