- Chapter 1
- ‘Give it here! That mouse ain’t fresh Lennie.’
- ‘Give you what, George?’ I ain’t got no mouse’.
- Chapter 2
- ‘You two were meant to be here this morning!’
- Chapter 3
- ‘Lennie take him back or I’ll tell Slim not to let you have him.’
- In the first chapter we are introduced to George and Lennie. We learn that Lennie is very forgetful and he keeps wanting to pet a mouse. George tells Lennie to drop the mouse, so Lennie gets upset. Lennie decides that he can live in a cave by himself, but George feels bad and tells Lennie he doesn’t want him to leave. Then they talk about how they are going to have a place for themselves and have all sorts of animals.
- Chapter 4
- ‘Your nuts, your crazy as a wedge’.
- In this chapter, Lennie and George meet the boss and his son Curley. The boss tells Lennie and George that he is frustrated with how late they were, and he also starts to have suspicions on Lennie because of how quiet he is. The boss also notices that George keeps speaking for Lennie which is weird. Then they meet Curley who asks them if they have seen his wife. Curley doesn’t like Lennie because of his imposing size.
- Chapter 5
- ‘I’ll kill him myself. I’ll shoot him in the guts.’
- In chapter 3, Slim, the ‘prince of the ranch’, gives Lennie one of his new puppies and let’s him pet it. Once Lennie comes back to the barn house, Curley comes in and starts arguing with Slim. Curley sees Lennie smiling (because of how much he admired the puppy), and thinks Lennie is laughing at him. Curley starts punching Lennie out of anger. George tells Lennie to fight back and Lennie ends up breaking Curley’s wrist.
- Chapter 6
- ‘Let’s get that place now George!’
- In this chapter, we meet a character called Crooks. Lennie also meets Crooks. Crooks tells Lennie about his life when he was younger and Lennie tells him about how he wants rabbits. Lennie also tells him that George is in town so Crooks tortures Lennie by telling him that George is gone forever and he is never coming back. Then, Curley’s wife comes in and threatens Crooks.
- In chapter 5, Lennie accidentally kills the new puppy he was given. He tries to hide the puppy and as he does that, Curley’s wife comes in. She lets him touch her hair and Lennie panics when she tells him to let go. Lennie doesn’t let go of her hair and he accidentally kill’s her as well. Lennie hides and when Curley finds out, he instantly knows who did this to his wife. He gets a gun and tries it find Lennie to shoot him.
- In the final chapter, Lennie hides in the brush. George knows where he is because George told him to go there when he needed to find Lennie. When Lennie sees George, he thinks George will be angry at him for everything he has done. But Lennie is surprised when George comforts Lennie and tells him that he isn’t angry at all. However, when Lennie is turned the other way, George shoots him in the neck with Curley’s gun.
