Meet Tom Walker. Tom is a miserly man that lives with his even more miserly wife. While married, the two do not love each other. In fact Tom is often beaten by his wife.
One day, while walking through a swamp, Tom is provoked by a dark-skinned man with an axe. The man claims that he is the owner of the swamp and that Tom is trespassing.
The stranger tells Tom of treasure that was buried by Kidd the Pirate. Tom, unsurprisingly, is interested.
Tom informs his wife about the treasure. She urges Tom to comply with the stranger. Tom refuses, for he feels he would sell his soul for the Devil if he did. The wife decides to go herself. However, when she attempts to, she does not return home, much to Tom's concern.
Tom decides to go retrieve the treasure as well as search for his wife. When he returns home, a man with a horse takes him. The two ride on and then suddenly disappear.
The people of Boston were not surprised by this result, as this was a common trick of the Devil, They simply shook their heads and shrugged their shoulders.
