  • Find a good spot!!!
  • In 1584 Captain Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe went to explore Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. Sir Walter Raleigh sent them to find a spot for the English Colony in North America.
  • They returned with two Native Americans, tobacco, and potatoes. Raleigh decided he wanted to start a colony and move there under command of his cousin Sir Richard Grenville.
  • Soon after everyone left a supply ship from Raleigh showed up along with Richard Glenville. When they arrived they were suprised to find that everybody was gone.
  • It took you two months?!
  • We're back! Look what we found!!!
  • In 1587 John White and the 150 settlers arrived at Roanoke. They only found 1 of the 15 men. They built up the place and settled there.
  • They sailed from Plymouth England in April 1585 and found land in June. After exploring the Coast they ended up in the North end of Roanoke Island and built a fort.
  • Let's do this people!
  • In 1590 John White returned to Roanoke only to find that it was abandoned. THe only thing he saw were the letters CRO carved on a tree and CROATOAN on another. The settlers fate is all but a mystery.
  • Sir Richard Glenville sailed back to England to get supplies. He left Ralph Lane in command of the colony.
  • It's pretty lonely out here
  • Due to food shortage, native american attacks, and Richard Glenville's delay in coming; they got discouraged, and in 1586 they all sailed back to England.
  • Let's go back to England everybody!

  • He decided to leave 15 men on the island to hold England's spot. He had another colony with 150 settlers that were told to go Roanoke .
