- In 2003 when your brother was born the heat was so intense we could hardly breathe outside. Finn didn't wear any clothes for the first six weeks of his life!
- Finn, what extreme weather events do you remember happening in your lifetime?
- In 2016 when Cyclone Winston hit Fiji and our friends went missing for six days. It was really scary.
- The heat wave in Europe started in June 2003 and ended in mid-August. Summer temperatures were 20-30% higher than the seasonal average. About 30,000 people died during the heatwave of 2003 making it one of deadliest natural disasters in Europe in the last 100 years and the worst in the last 50 years.
- Cyclone Winston was one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall anywhere on earth since records began in 1970. When it happened my family had some friends in Fiji and they were missing for six days. Luckily they were found and they came to NZ to stay with us.
- In 2019 and 2020 bushfires burnt in Australia for nine months. 46 million acres were burnt and scientists think that over a billion animals died in the fires and some animals are at risk of extinction.
- The 1978 storm in Gisborne caused massive landslides and triggered a change in monitoring of flood and storm events in New Zealand. 140mm of rain fell in 12 hours. My dad was in a tent and got completely blown away!
