  • The Black Codes were a series of laws created to restrict the newly freed African American peoples' rights.
  • No person of color can testify against a white person in court unless the white person agrees with it.
  • Southern states created various laws to eliminate black voting.
  • 1890-1906
  • Poll taxes and literacy tests were among the most popular. The poll tax required all citizens to pay a fee to have the right to vote. These laws prevented African Americans from voting, targeting their financial inability to pay the fee, and their illiteracy.
