An average working class family in a rural area in 1865
In the 1860s, most of America's population was rural. Many families worked and lived on farms and grew crops for a living.
NYC in 1870
By 1870 there were only 2 American cities with the population of 500,000.
Throughout the 1880s and early 1990s, skyscrapers were being built.
In 1885, the first skyscraper was built in Chicago
Average family in the early 1900s (1910-1920)
More factories formed between 1865-1920 as well as businesses. This allowed many job opportunities to be available.

By 1900, there were 6 American cities. 3 of them were New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
By 1910-1920, America was more urban than rural.
