- Three prisoners were trapped in a cave and forced to watch the shadows that were displayed from the fire behind them, the fire being their own light due to the fact that they weren't aloud to go outside or see any natural light.
- They were never aloud to turn around so they always thought the shadows that refelcted onto the walls were an accurate display of what people looked like and what everything else actually looked like.
- One of the prisoner's chains broke so he went outside of the cave for the first time and saw the real world. Because the sunlight is so bright his eyes took some time to adjust because he has only ever been seeing things in the dark, so after his eyes adapted he saw everything and people as they are and eventually he saw his own reflection.
- When the prisoner returned to the cave he kept on going on about the world outside of the cave and how different it is. He tried getting the other two prisoners to come outside with him so they could also see the outside world but they resisted and claimed they wanted to stay in the cave because thought he was crazy.
- They pushed the prisoner aside and he could barely see inside the cave becasue now his eyes had adapted to the natural light and the shapes the shadows illustrated weren't clear to him anymore.
- The prisoner left the cave and went back out only to wonder whether the things outside the cave and all the different figures were any more real than the shadows they always saw inside of the cave.
