  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street '' by Rod Sterling, one of the main themes is Mankind is it's Own worst enemy. I say that because, in the first scene Pete Van Horn had been shot and killed by Charlie. On page 83, it stated Charlie slowly raises the gun. As the figure gets closer and closer, he suddenly pulls the trigger. The sound of it explodes in the stillness. The figure suddenly lets out a small cry, stumbles forward onto his knees and then falls forward onto his face. The Figures hadn't hurt or killed anyone or told anyone to harm a person. Charlie had made that decision by himself. Then, in the next scene, it shows Charlie getting tackled by a man. On page 84, it tells us “ A man breaks away from the crowd to chase Charlie. The man tackles him and lands on top of him.” Charlie got tackled because of people's confidence that he was the monster. This supports the theme because, no matter how many times Charlie had said something to defend himself, there would always be another person finding a way to make him suspicious. The residents on Maple street were desperate to find a scapegoat so they used any small piece of suspicious activities to blame a person. Finally, in the last scene, the neighbors are all pointing fingers at each other and blaming each other. On page number 85, it says “ The people shout, accuse, scream.” This proves that mankind is its own worst enemy because, instead of trying to stay a team they blamed each other. In conclusion, the theme of “ The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” theme is that mankind is its own worst enemy.
