- The U.S. had too much money; they had nothing to use it up on. They wanted to expand so that they could make more businesses and get rid of the unused money.
- The U.S. navy needed to be powerful in order to help control trade which meant that they had to get bigger. If there is a bigger navy then they need more naval bases in the world.
- The U.S. wanted to spread Christianity and Western Civilization throughout the world, so they wanted to expand their land to make it go quicker.
