- Now, it was Christmas day in San Francisco, and Della had only $1 and ¢70 with which to buy Jim a gift. One day, she cut her hair and sold it for money.
- I need money to buy Jim a gift for Christmas!
- He's gonna kill me.
- When Della got home, she was trying to fix her hair and tried to look good but it didn't work out. Jim was on his way home, he was practicing on what to say to Della. When Jim entered the house, he saw Della and looked at her seriously. Della was scared that Jim might leave him.
- All who thinks themselves wise should take note that of all who those give gifts, these two were the wisest. For the greatest gifts don't come when you're giving something to someone. They come when you're giving something up for someone.
- Jim showed her his gift for Christmas. Della smiled and jumped around like a little child receiving a gift for Christmas. Della then said, "My hair grows so fast, Jim." Della showed Jim her the chain for his watch and said, "Show me your watch; I want to see how it looks on you."
- I sold my watch for money.
- My hair grows so fast, Jim. Show me your watch; I wanna see how it looks on you
- Jim don't look at me that way
- I cut my hair and sold it for money.
