  • Hi, I'm Ashlynn, and today I am going to educate you on the sex work industry. I know when you hear the word sex work, you probably think about prostitution, but there are so many different areas and aspects. From the various forms of sex work to the laws surrounding sex work, it can be a complicated topic. First, we will start from the beginning.
  • SEXWORK
  • Sex in Antiquity
  • Prostitution is known as one of the oldest professions, Sumerian records date back to 2400 B.C. In ancient Greece and Rome, prostitution was recognized as a form of economic activity, and it was not viewed as adultery but as an acceptable way of self-control.
  • The Middle Ages
  • During the Middle Ages, the majority of Greek and Roman prostitutes were enslaved, and their owners made money for their services. While many of the prostitutes were women, there were also some male sex workers. For towns in Europe, sex work was a crucial source of revenue at the time, but even while prostitutes were considered necessary, they were also marginalized in medieval society.
  • The 19th Century
  • In the 1830s, the average sex worker would earn as much in an hour as a seamstress would make in a day. It was around the mid-1800s that prostitution would become a social issue and the focus of many reformers. Prostitution became a very lucrative business in the 19th century. Some girls and young women were unwittingly lured into the profession. Others, widowed or abandoned, turned to prostitution to support themselves and their children.
  • The 20th Century
  • Many debates at the beginning of the 20th century continued to criticize prostitution. Most women's economic situation and the lack of opportunities to contribute to society often drove them into prostitution. The working conditions of prostitution were often brutal in the 20th century; they were abused, beaten, and even mutilated by their pimps. The 20th century was also the start of widespread concern that sex trafficking had become a prominent issue within the industry.
  • Current
  • Currently, sex work is legal and regulated in several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Greece. In some places like the U.K., prostitution is decriminalized, but several aspects that often surround prostitution are illegal. The U.S. follows the same stance against prostitution that it has for several years, and in all states except Nevada, it is illegal and is subject to criminalization.
