  • Samspon and Gregory meet at the town market and discuss defending their honor and how much they hate the Montagues.
  • Gregory, on my word, we'll not carry coals.
  • No, for then we should be colliers.
  • Sampson and Gregory stop Abraham and plan to insult him as he walks by.
  • I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list.
  • Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them, if they bear it.
  • Sampson bites his thumb at Abraham who asks him if he is biting his thumb at him (a great insult at the time).
  • Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
  • No, but I do bite my thumb.
  • Sampson calls Abbraham a coward and challenges him to a duel. Benvolio (Montague) arrives and tries to break up the fighting until Tybalt (Capulet) enters the battle
  • Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow.
  • Down with the Capulets! Down with the Montagues!
  • Several Capulets and Montagues arrive at the battle and join in. A crowd of citizens, sick of the constant fighting of the Montagues and Capulets begin booing them. An officer arrives and attempts to stop the fighting but is unsuccessful.
  • Clubs, bills, partisans! Strike! Beat them down!
  • The Prince arrives with several soldiers and finally stops the fighting. The Prince makes a speech and informs both houses that anyone that fights will be executed.
  • Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace,Profaners of this neighbor-stainèd steel .Will they not hear? What, ho! You men, you beastsThat quench the fire of your pernicious rage with purple fountains issueing from your vains!
