- "I can only tell you this Charlotte, a sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship away from the safe port...but once you are abroad...the winds have a mind of their own. Be careful Charlotte, careful of the wind you choose."
- "Zachariah, what will become of me?"
- "I would have thought you would stay in your cabin reading edifing tracts."
- "Charlotte, your face is so brown?"
- The sun was hot.
- "I look forward to reading a more formal account of your journey in your journal."
- "You look like an Indian."
- "Would you call me Charlotte? Be my friend?"
- "It is master who pays my wages."
- As the ship nears the harbor Charlotte begins to wonder if she can ever go back to her old life. She asks Zachariah what she should do.
- "The spelling Charlotte! The spelling!"
- Charlotte is happy to see her family, but is overwhelmed by the formal manners, large house, enclosed spaces, and the lack of true feeling among her family members.
- "Not a word, not a question to consol me?"
- Charlotte is sent to her room after dinner. She tries to talk to the servants but they too are formal and cold. She feels very lonley.
- "I've decided to come home!"
- "Charlotte?"
- Charlotte's father takes her journal and reads it. She is called down to see her parents. Her father is very angry. He does not believe the story she has written about her voyage is true. He critizes her writting and throws her precious journal into the fire.
- Charlotte stays in her room and pretends to read the books her father gives her. In reality, she is rewritting the story of her voyage in the margins of the books and making a plan to run away.
- Charlotte learns the date and time the Seahawk will be leaving the harbor for another voyage. She dresses in her old sailor cloths, runs away, and joins the ship. She is met by Zachariah, who is happy to see her. She finally feels at home.
