  • Compromise of 1850 - September 1850
  • UT and NM would use popular sovereignty. Texas then paid $10 million to the west. The sales of the slave trade were banned in D.C. People would have in free states to capture and return runaway slaves. Northerners did not like the Fugitive Act. Leading to disagrements.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin - March 20th, 1852
  • This argued that slavery was a political and moral issue. After this book, Northerners started to protest against the fugitive act even more. While Southerners claimed everything in the book is was false about slavery and their way of life.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act/"Bleeding Kansas" - May 30th, 1854
  • Senator Douglas proposed ideas that Northerners did not like. It angered them as slavery started to expand where it should not have been according to the MO compromise. People from MO attacked antislavery people and voted illegally. This made the disagreement with Southerners and Northeners even deeper.

  • Dred Scott Decision - 1857
  • The Dred Scott Decision outraged abolitionists. The divide between North and South over slavery grew in the secession of southern states from the Union and the creation of the Confederate States of America.

  • Harpers' Ferry - October 16th, 1859
  • John Brown led a group of 21 men to seize the federal arsenal and distribute the weapons to the slaves. This began the slave uprising, and their mission was to end slavery. Obviously, the South didn't like that, and the southerners got scared and pushed to the south toward to withdrawal of eleven southern states from the Union in 1860

  • Election of 1860 - November 6th, 1860
  • Lincoln was going to be elected because he vowed to end slavery. Southerners didn't want that to happen. They claim it would be the greatest evil to ever fall in the country. That made them want to do everything to stop him from being elected.
  • Lincoln must be stopped! He will ruin everything for us.
