- this horrible war looks as if it will never end. But I most get home to Hilda for Christmas.
- Oh Lord, look at this war-torn land, surely our heavenly father would not want us fighting during the time of his sons birth.

- I suppose one last song couldn't hurt anybody

- this is a letter that I will be shipping to the newspaper tomorrow on Christmas day and I think you are the most deserving to write in it
- This Christmas was a blessing from the lord like no other, an spirit of Christmas joy descended upon the wretched battlefield like no other. I would like to think that spirit was my beloved little girl, Hilda, and to her I will say, your papa misses you very much, and I am holding out hope against all odds in this great war that I will see you again.
