  • Deion Sanders is known for his playing career at Florida State University from 1985-1989, but he actually completed his degree and graduated from HBCU Talladega College in Alabama (Suggs, 2023). His love and support for HBCU's continued when he started his coaching career at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi.

  • At the 1989 NFL Draft, Deion Sanders was picked 5th overall by the Atlanta Falcons, in the lead up to draft the NY Giants hosted him for an interview where he famously told them that he was not going to be available at their 18th pick. He also had the famous moment saying "if you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play well. If you play well, they pay well" (Picotti, 2023)
  • At the time the media tried to paint him has a thuggish character. Being a popular black college athlete in the 80's made him a symbol for other black bodies to be characterized as. Sanders is a unique case of a black athlete being able to leverage their power for a better/longer career, he would go on to become a TV analyst and college coach (Thrasher,2016).
  • During his playing career, he was known for his flashy personality, style, and nickname "Neon Deion" (Piccotti, 2023). His play and personality is widely viewed as the emergence of new age athletes. Today, athletes have become celebrities because of social media and their personalities.
  • Sanders began coaching his sons high school team in Texas, before eventually being hired at Jackson State and Colorado. In his first season at the power five level, Sanders and the Buffaloes against Nebraska averaged nearly 9 million viewers (Gilliam, 2023). Gilliam attributes the attention to Sander's unquantifiable energy and personality to recruit and coach kids in a new era of college football.
