- What is happening on land, is there a flood?
- Well, not exactly. This process is called 'surface runoff'. It happens when water occurring on the ground's surface can no longer sufficiently rapidly infiltrate in the soil when there's an excess of rainwater.
- So, what happens instead when rainwater infiltrates in the soil?
- That is a very good question, let me show you how it happens.
- Water table is formed when rainwater and water from the other water bodies on the surface of the Earth seeps down into the soil and is stored as groundwater. This passing down of water through the soil is known as infiltration. A water table describes the boundary between water-saturated ground and unsaturated ground.
- Water table, though, is not always going to let rainwater seep down into the soil. It can also reach the surface only, this process is called 'interception'. It's the fraction of rain that falls onto vegetation but never reaches the ground, instead it evaporates the wet ground after a rainfall event and it dries out soon after.
- Now I understand what happens! But, I have another question. Where does the excess of water from the water table go then, like, what is there's too much water that may cause a flooding?
- In this case, a throughflow happens; it's the movement of water downslope within the soil layer. It normally takes place when the soil is completely saturated with water. This water then flows underground until it reaches a river, lake, or ocean.
